Major Bruce Barteaux
Canada

But those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

I have had a wonderful military career as an Army officer which has allowed me to serve with the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force as well as in headquarters from brigade to national level. I graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. During my time there I met and married my best friend, Bonnie, who has remained with me for nearly 36 years through moves but was left at home during deployments. My military occupation is in the Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. RCEME is responsible for all aspects of land systems and I have been involved in commanding local maintenance organizations as well as managing national “fleets” as part of life cycle management or project management. I completed three interesting years in Germany, participated in a UN mission is Eretria and a NATO deployment in Afghanistan.

The focus on being fit as a soldier is something that I have embraced for my whole career. I was a Varsity wrestler in College but practiced running during off-nights and off-season to keep in shape. Since graduation running has become my main fitness activity and a sport in which I am quite competitive. I also enjoy a wide range of other sports for training and leisure.

My sports accomplishments have allowed me to be selected as the environmental male winner for a number of years. I was the Canadian Armed Forces male athlete once and I have been inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame.

Bonnie and I have two adult children who have both made army careers their chosen profession. They are both successful and fit.

  • Since 2001: I have run over 50 Ultras
  • Since 2002: I have represented Canada internationally in World 100 KM Championship, 24 Hours World Championship or Commonwealt Championship.
  • I have been the Canadian Male 100 Km Champion twice and the 24 Hour Champion once and I currently hold that title.
  • 3 participation at "Canadian Death Race" (5 legs, 125 km, 3 mountain summits and 27,000 feet of elevation difference)
  • I am very thankful for my God-given good health and I have completed many ultra marathons as fund raisers for the Terry Fox Foundation whose goal is to support innovative and promising research in the fight against cancer. I have run almost 2400 km and raised nearly $60,000 for this cause.
